7Things You Should Know About series...

"The EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative's (ELI's) 7 Things You Should Know About... series provides concise information on emerging learning technologies and related practices. Each brief focuses on a single technology or practice and discusses:
What it is
How it works
Where it is going
Why it matters to teaching and learning

The short 2 page articles provide quick, no-jargon overviews of technologies and related practices that have demonstrated or may demonstrate positive learning impacts and explains a new learning technology or practice quickly and clearly."

The focus on most of the articles are 2.0 technologies. The current issue talks about using Wikipedia. They're really well written and concise.

Endeca at the NCSU Libraries

On January 12, 2006, the NCSU Libraries announced the first library deployment of a revolutionary new online catalog. Leveraging the advanced search and Guided Navigation® capabilities of the Endeca ProFind™ platform, the NCSU Libraries' new catalog provides the speed and flexibility of popular online search engines while capitalizing on existing catalog records. As a result, students, faculty, and researchers can now search and browse the NCSU Libraries' collection as quickly and easily as searching and browsing the Web, while taking advantage of rich content and cutting-edge capabilities that no Web search engine can match. http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/endeca/

Phoenix Public Library has also gone this route...as the first public library to do this.
Check out their Home Page "Search", which searches catalog, website, and library programs.

PLCMC: Advanced Learning 2.1

The folks at PLCMC are keeping the momentum going; they have created an advanced program called Learning 2.1

"Is there a master list of the "things" that will be covered in the Learning 2.1 program?"

"No. Learning 2.1 is designed to be an ongoing discovery and exploration program that introduces participants to three or four new things to explore each month. Since new tools and technologies are being introduced constantly, we wanted to use this program to continually guide participants to new "things" they can play with as they expand their knowledge toolbox."

If we get a lot of enthusiasm, we might be able to do something similar.

Pew Internet Quiz

How Techie Are You Quiz from Pew Internet & American Life Project

Where Do You Fit?

"Do you cringe when your cell phone rings? Do you suffer from withdrawal when you can't check your Blackberry? Do you rush to post your vacation video to your Web site? The questions below allow you to place yourself in one of the categories in the Pew Internet Project's Typology of Information and Communication Technology Users. To identify the typology group to which you belong, please answer the questions below. When you press the 'Calculate My Results' button, a new page will tell you in which group you fit, along with a description of the general characteristics of that group."

I know we shouldn't require staff to take this quiz, but I think it would be fascinating to see where individual staff members fall in this continuum.
